Important or Urgent?

Knowing the difference can change your world

It appears that for some of us these days, to be busy has almost become a badge of honour. Having a lot of events or activities scheduled seems to demonstrate how successful we are, but how do we really feel?

A constant stream of urgent tasks can cause you to feel overwhelmed and anxious. This intense level of activity often means that you do not leave enough time to address what is important in your life.

So what is the difference between urgency and importance?

Urgency refers to how quickly action is required. Urgent tasks may include a ringing phone, a drop-in visitor or a text message.

Important things in life are those that do not have a deadline but are crucial to balance, happiness and well being. Important focuses include family, finances, relationships, exercise, diet, personal development and relaxation.

If you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious, take the time today to identify how much time your are devoting to urgent and important activities in your life.

If your “urgent” list is much longer than your “important” list then your homework today is to re-evaluate your priorities to find balance in your life.

One Response to Important or Urgent?

  1. Kama says:

In the past few years society seems to have built up a sense of constant urgency, things are speeding up and everyone is trying to catch up. It is possibly time to reflect as you say on what is really important and what actually is so urgent. Time to slow down and find balance.
